Ever wondered if you’re getting the whole ‘tipping’ thing completely wrong while on holiday? This world map will set you straight, no matter where you happen to be.

With hospitality staff in some countries relying on tips to get by, it’s important to know what the custom is when you’re in different places around the world. Indeed, one bartender in Texas previously shared a video of her $9.28 paycheck to show just how important tipping is to those working in the service industry.

Well, luckily for all of us, tourism platform Hawaiian Islands has compiled some very handy maps that show how much it is customary to tip hospitality staff, hotel staff and taxi drivers around the world.

Hawaiian Islands’ research found that in a third of total countries you should give a 10% tip to restaurant staff, whereas some countries simply do not expect you to leave a tip.

In many restaurants in Europe, a service charge is included in the overall bill, and this the 10% tip becomes more of an additional gesture than a hard and fast rule.

By contrast, in the US “federal law dictates that employers can pay tipped staff just $2.13 an hour if they make at least $30 a month extra in tips,” per Hawaiian Islands, which means that tips are hugely important to those working in the hospitality industry.
