Maison Hennessy celebrates Lunar New Year with Yan Pei-Ming artist collaboration

Maison Hennessy is ushering in 2023 with the help of Chinese artist Yan Pei-Ming, who is honouring the Lunar New Year with a new artwork.

La Grande Course, a painting by the artist, has been created to celebrate the entire zodiac in all its diversity.

“La Grande Course is a major piece of my oeuvre. It’s rather monumental, with animals in movement, and a colour – the colour of Cognac – that I’ve never used before,” Yan Pei-Ming says of his latest work. “I wanted to do something exceptional, something complicated, that I would be proud of.”

This special piece will be accompanied by limited Lunar New Year editions of Hennessy VSOP, Hennessy XO, and Hennessy Paradis Cognacs featuring elements of this artwork.

“When you hold a bottle of Cognac up to sunlight, its hues vary so much. I wanted to portray Cognac — but it’s light that is really the colour of this painting,” the artist says.

The rarest offer, a one-litre Hennessy Paradis carafe, created in collaboration with French porcelain maker Maison Bernardaud, and hand-decorated in the company’s atelier in Limoges, has been produced in a limited edition of only 888 pieces. The Hennessy Paradis carafe is presented in a crafted wooden box, and is available for purchase exclusively from select retail destinations.

This project marks the first time Maison Hennessy has collaborated with Yan Pei-Ming. Chinese by birth, the artist moved to France at a young age, and graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, making that city his home and the epicentre of his art.

“I love France enormously,” Pei-Ming says. “ I came here knowing that I wanted to paint. That quickly cancelled out any doubts and hesitations. I kept asking myself: ‘Are you capable? Do you have something to say? How do you want to express it?’ France is where I developed my character and forged my vision of the world. It’s the country that gave me a chance.”

To further celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year, Hennessy XO is collaborating with Cantonese restaurant Hakkasan in two of its London locations. Taking place from Tuesday 10 January to Tuesday 7 February, Hakkasan Mayfair and Hakkasan Fitzrovia will introduce a limited-edition menu and cocktail in collaboration with Hennessy XO.

The limited-edition Chinese New Year cocktail, Tùzi Tail, in partnership with Hennessy XO, has been created by Andrei Danila, head bartender at Hakkasan Mayfair, and features Hennessy XO Cognac, carrot, lemongrass and white chocolate foam. The sophisticated cocktail is comprised of different layers to symbolise prosperity, good fortune and unity. With Tùzi meaning rabbit in Chinese, the cocktail has herbaceous notes and is designed playfully to look like the fluffy white tail of a rabbit.
