Diageo-owned Casamigos, founded by Hollywood royalty George Clooney, has been named the top celebrity-backed spirits brand of 2022 by US e-commerce platform Drizly.

George Clooney's Casamigos Tequila named top celebrity-backed spirit

Casamigos Tequila was founded by George Clooney, Rande Gerber and Mike Meldman in 2013. In 2022 the brand was named the fastest-growing spirits brand of the year, after nearly tripling its brand value over 12 months according to a new report.

Brand Finance’s report revealed that Casamigos has capitalised on Tequila’s surging popularity around the world, and indeed outstripped its competition in terms of growth, doubling its sales last year.

And it certainly can’t hurt to have Hollywood royalty among your co-owners when it comes to brand value. They don’t come much more legendary than George Clooney, who sold the brand to Diageo in 2017 for US$1 billion.

Now, US e-commerce platform Drizly has named the brand the top-selling Tequila and celebrity-backed spirits brand of the year, as reported by our sister publication The Spirits Business.

Tequila held 19% share of the spirits category on Drizly in 2022, up from 18% in 2021, 15% in 2020 and 13% from 2019. In addition to increased interest for heritage and Mexican-owned tequila producers, celebrity-owned tequila brands are some of the key drivers of the category’s growth over the past five years.

Other celebrity-owned Tequila brands vying for the top spot include Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s Teremaka, Kendall Jenner’s 818, and Sean Combs- aka P. Diddy-backed DeLeon.

Casamigos ranks as the best-selling tequila brand on Drizly, and each of its three products — Casamigos Blanco, Casamigos Reposado, and Casamigos Añejo — rank in the top five sellers of their respective subcategories.

The brand’s most expensive style, añejo, is the second best-selling añejo Tequila on Drizly after Diageo’s Don Julio 1948.

Casamigos is a top-gifted tequila brand on Drizly. Both the Casamigos Blanco and Añejo were among Drizly’s most-gifted tequila SKUs in 2022.
