Mixologists unveil Australia’s most expensive cocktail

Mixologists from Dean & Nancy on 22 in Sydney and Sky Bar in Melbourne have partnered up to create an ultra-premium version of an Old Fashioned, and the price tag isn’t for the faint-hearted.

Dubbed the ‘Woodford Reserve Gold Fashioned’, the costly cocktail was created to mark this year’s Woodford Reserve Old Fashioned Week (5 to 14 November). The star of the special drink is Woodford Reserve Baccarat Edition, which is made by finishing Kentucky Bourbon in XO Cognac barrels.

To add to the decadence, there is the addition of a gold-infused Château d’Yquem Sauternes reduction and saffron and vanilla bitters. Then, for good measure, hand-carved ice is added to the crystal tumbler.

And the cost of such luxury? Brace yourself, it will set you back AU$15,000 (around £8,480). That does also include two baccarat tumblers and a AU$3,000 (£1,700) bottle of Woodford Reserve Baccarat Edition. Even so, it is still a suitably decadent delight for those who can afford it, which can’t be many given that the median monthly house rent in Sydney has jumped to AU$2,600 (£1,470).

For those deciding whether to pay six months of rent or a single cocktail, Dean & Nancy on 22 bartender Stefano Filardi suggested that there are alternatives: “We know the price tag is big, but we think every dollar is worth the Woodford Gold Fashioned. And for everyone else looking to enjoy a bit of luxury without the investment, we have a list of cocktails and exciting things on offer during Old Fashioned Week that won’t cost an arm and a leg.”
