Sotheby’s offers rare Dalmore whisky

Sotheby’s is to offer a bottle of rare whisky that has been designed by renown architect Kengo Kuma, the designer behind the V&A Dundee.

The sale of the Luminary No.1 The Rare – a 48 year old single malt whisky from The Dalmore, comes as the result of the distillery four-year collaboration with the museum’s V&A Dundee site.

Only three bottles of the whisky and two sculptures by Kuma have been created, the sculptures consisting of 48 hand-made diamonds made from Scottish Oak, Japanese Oak and polished metal to reflect the age of the liquid.

The whisky itself has been made by master distiller Richard Paterson from rare and aged Dalmore whisky which include influences from Oloroso and Apostoles Sherry, Vintage Port and American White Oak. The assemblage has been finished in Scottish Tay Oak and Japanese Oak casks, air-dried at the distillery for years, it said.

The lot has an estimate of £95,000-180,000, with a  portion of the proceeds being donated to V&A Dundee.

Jonny Fowle, Sotheby’s Head of Whisky & Spirits, North America and EMEA, said working with The Dalmore “always brings new surprises as their creativity seemingly knows no bounds”.

“The Luminary is not simply an extremely rare bottle, but one of exceptional quality with an exquisite design lovingly put together by Richard and Kuma,” he said.

Bidding on the sale opens on 1 November.
