Co-curated by AWSEC and Symington Family Estates, the inaugural course, named “AWSEC Port Essentials”, is an introductory, in-person course exploring the wonders of Port wines from the Douro region of Portugal.

During the four-hour course, students will learn key topics about Port, including its history, terroir, sustainable initiatives, ageing process, service, cocktails, food pairings and more. Pupils will also be guided through a systematic tasting and evaluation of Port of various styles.

Following the completion of a 30 minute closed-book test, an AWSEC School of Port Certificate will be issued to successful participants who reach a 70% score or above.

Designed for both wine lovers and trade professionals, no prerequisite is required but some basic wine knowledge is recommended. The course is divided into four key chapters – Introduction & History, The Terroir of Port Wine, Ageing & Port Styles and Port Wine Appreciation.

The first “AWSEC Port Essentials” course will be held on Saturday 15 October 2022 from 1pm-6pm at AWSEC Sheung Wan Centre, priced from $2,780 per person.

Launched in 2020, the School of Port concept was developed by Symington Family Estates during the Coronavirus lockdown as a way of continuing training sessions which had previously taken place off-line. When it first launched, the course was delivered in online format with a series of digital workshops and online video courses.
