Roederer launches 2015 vintage of Brut Nature
Champagne Louis Roederer has launched the fourth expression of its Brut Nature cuvée with Philippe Stark using wines from the 2015 vintage.
Launched in September 2014 with a Brut Nature Blanc from the 2006 harvest, the inaugural zero-dosage Champagne – which was the product of a tie-up with French designer Philippe Stark – was followed by further expressions from the 2009 and 2012 harvests – the latter including for the first time a rosé too.
Today it has been announced that Louis Roederer is releasing a blanc and rosé from 2015, describing the year as “continental and sunlit”, and a “spectacular vintage with a hot, sunny summer, record high temperatures and a glorious end to the season with rainy spells that helped to slow the ripening”.
Speaking further of the harvest, Louis Roederer cellar master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon said, “It reminded me of the 1985 with its sappy character and very promising, quite unusual aromatic profile.”
Continuing, he said, “It was an outstanding vintage in particular for the Pinot noir which displayed exceptional density, depth and balance.”
As for the Champagnes being released now, Philippe Starck said, “The Brut Nature White 2015 is a Champagne of action and movement, a Champagne that exudes intelligence. Taut and lively, bright and elegant. It is a Champagne of the daylight, of instant drinking pleasure.”
Meanwhile, commenting on the rosé, he said, Brut Nature Rosé 2015 is a mental challenge, a unique sensory and sentimental experience in which you drink the colour, you drink the pink! Soft and intimate, bright and powdery. This is a sunset Champagne.”
As previously reported by db, when speaking at the launch of the 2012 vintage of Louis Roederer Brut Nature, Starck described the partnership with the Champagne house as similar to mixing Royalty with punk rock.
Pointing at Louis Roederer director Frédéric Rouzaud, and the Champagne producer’s cellar master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Starck said, “These two took a big risk with me.”
Continuing, he highlighted the difference between the respectability of Roederer and Starck’s outrageous nature by comparing the partnership to a pair of contrasting British figures.
“It’s like the Queen of England with Johnny Rotten – and I’m the punk,” he said, admitting that his nature was like the loud-mouthed lead singer of British band the Sex Pistols.
However, he also stressed the successful nature of the tie-up, which began in 2006, and resulted in an inaugural Starck-Roederer Brut Nature Blanc from the 2006 harvest – Roederer’s first Champagne without any dosage, which was released to retailers worldwide in September 2014.
