Boundary Brewing to take over John Hewitt pub in Belfast
Boundary Brewing in Belfast has disclosed it is due to take over the running of the iconic city centre pub The John Hewitt.
The John Hewitt, owned by the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre, is based on Donegall Street in the Northern Ireland capital and is named after the famous Belfast poet.
The pub, which first opened in 1999 and will continue to be owned by Belfast Resource Centre, has reportedly entered into an agreement with Boundary Brewery allowing a third party to run the pub for the first time.
Boundary Brewing is a community co-operative based in East Belfast and had initially planned to open its first permanent taproom on its brewing site after years of pop-up events, however the opportunity to operate the John Hewitt was too good to turn down.
In a message shared this week, Boundary Brewing said: “We couldn’t believe it. It’s beautiful. It’s iconic. It’s jam-packed full of potential. It’s almost too good to be true. We’ve been absolutely busting to share this news and opportunity with you all.”
As a venue, the John Hewitt focuses on live music, support of the arts, and really good beer. The pub has 16 taps and is due to have eight Boundary Brewing taps, two rotating taps, and a permanent tap each for its best friends, namely: Cloudwater, Verdant, Deya, Kinnegar, Galway Bay and Whiplash.
“All the Craic is had in here,” said the brewer on its site, revealing that there is also a plan to “look to add a food truck outside” as well as offer a member’s discount that can be used across all Boundary Brewing beer.
