Hair lightening beer hack goes viral on TikTok
A woman on TikTok has gone viral after posting a video of herself pouring beer over her hair to lighten it in the sun.
The TikTokker, @harpdaddysupreme, gained 4.9 million views on the video platform after revealing her hair dyeing trick.
Hailing from Florida, the TikTok star claims to have been lightening her hair this way “my whole life”.
“I am about to put y’all on to the best way to highlight your hair completely naturally,” she says. “I used to have blonde hair, so I don’t know if it’s going to work better now that I have brown hair or worse.”
Traditionally, lemon juice can be used as a way to naturally lighten hair in the sun. But, as the TikTokker explains, she suffers from a rare skin condition called phytophotodermatitis, meaning she had to find an alternative.
Phytophotodermatitis is caused by exposure to a type of chemical found on plant surfaces, most commonly carrots, celery, wild parsnips and citrus fruits. The chemical can become activated by UVA rays through photosynthesis. If your skin comes into contact with the chemical and the chemical becomes activated, a reaction can occur. Contact with this activated substance, even briefly, can cause skin reactions in some people.
@harpdaddysupreme therefore turned to beer to naturally lighten her hair in the sun.
“I normally use Corona Light but it can be any light beer,” she explains in the video. She then steps into her pool and pours a bottle of beer into her hair, soaking it through.
@harpdaddysupreme I bet if you add lemon it’ll work even better!!! #florida #naturalhighlight ♬ original sound – harps
“The best part about this hack is you get to drink the rest,” she says, ending the video.
The TikTokker’s advice was met with mixed reviews in the comments.
One commenter wrote: “I would rather gnaw off my own foot than put beer in my hair but if you like it i love it.”
While another was shocked to hear others hadn’t heard of this hack. “I’m surprised people in the comments don’t know about this, maybe it’s just a Florida girl thing,” they said.
