Find out the top 10 wineries of California

A new top 10 list of must-try wineries within California has been identified by ratings and reviews site Yelp.

For a state that has 3,600 wineries, according to USA Wine Ratings, making the top 10 list is quite a feat, but unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by wineries in Northern California’s wine country, especially Napa and Sonoma counties.

Additionally, a few areas outside the region made the list, including Vineyard Grant James and Espinosa Vineyards — both in San Diego County, showing off the breadth of quality across Californian wine.

The Yelp list methodology involved evaluating all of the California wineries on its site on several factors, including the number and quality of ratings.

However, it reassured that all of the wineries in the Californian wine top 10 have a five-star overall rating and that each business also had this score as of June 2022.

Ranked as the number one winery in the list, Shadybrook Estate in Napa, also keeps horses on the property, and allows visitors to book horseback riding experiences. It was praised for its excellent customer service, with one reviewer highlighting how there was “zero snobbery at this winery”.

The winery Vincent Arroyo in Calistoga, which came in second place within the listing was also given high praise by Yelp reviewers, who stated that its red wines were so good, it would likely even gain a vote from white wine loyalists.

The top 10 wineries in California, according to Yelp, are listed below.

  1. Shadybrook Estate Winery, Napa
  2. Vincent Arroyo Family Winery, Calistoga
  3. Vineyard Grant James, Ramona
