Argentine vegan wines break into UK market

Doña Paula launches a range of 100% vegan wines in the UK via distributor North South Wines, as interest in the category grows.

As demand for vegan wines continues to grow, Argentine producer Doña Paula is perfectly placed to make a splash in the segment with its Los Cardos collection; a range of four 100% vegan wines.

Having become one of only a handful of wineries in Argentina to achieve Bodegas de Argentina Sustainable Certification version 3.0 in April 2019, an entirely vegan range is the next step in Doña Paula’s sustainable mission.

It comes as UK consumers spent almost £600 million on meat-free food items in 2020, according to market-data company Statista. This is almost double the spending four years previously, which totalled £300 million.

Statista data also shows that nearly 2.6% of Brits identify as vegan, meaning that brands choosing to tap into the trend could stand to reap the rewards.

Los Cardos Private Collection by Doña Paula, introduced via North South Wines, includes a single vineyard, oaked Cabernet Sauvignon and a Malbec from Luján De Cuyo, along with a Sauvignon Blanc, and unoaked Chardonnay both from the Uco Valley.

Vegan wine fans should look out for the thistles or ‘Los Cardos’ that adorn the wine labels; a wry nod to local folklore that says that the presence of thistles in a vineyard is evidence of healthy, bountiful land.

Sustainably focused North South Wines is the ideal partner to help bring Los Cardos wines to the UK market and says that veganism and Argentine wine are like a venn diagram when it comes to targeting Gen Z consumers.

Kim Wilson, managing director, North South Wines, says: “Argentina seems to be particularly popular with a younger, digitally savvy generation” and said that it was paramount for North South Wines to have a partner “who is dynamic in that respect and understands the UK market.”

Renowned viticulturalist and winemaker Martin Kaiser will oversee the production of the Los Cardos range in Argentina, and nurture its 100% vegan and sustainably produced wines throughout their journey.
