What is the Sierra Tequila sombrero for?
When digging out the tequila from your drinks cabinet for Cinco de Mayo, the bottle lid might be more useful than you realise.
Sierra, owned by German company Borco, is produced at the Destilería Sierra in Guadalajara and is Europe’s best-selling tequila. The gold plastic sombrero on Sierra Reposado and the red one on Sierra Silver (or black one on the Antiguo range) may not just be clever branding though.
With Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates a Mexican victory against the French Empire, now upon us, Tequila themed posts tend to go viral as the celebration has expanded beyond Mexico to become a major drinking occasion. Some social media users have figured out that the distinctive hat can also have rather more practical functions when it comes to preparing drinks.
It was two years ago that Twitter user @J4CKMULL shared the hack of using the hat as a means of creating a ring of salt to the add to the rim of the glass.

However, the hat/lid’s versatility does not stop there. Others have suggested that it can also be used as a lime squeezer to extract juice for Margaritas. It has even been posited that, when inverted, it provides the perfect measure for a shot of tequila.
Though the lid is capable of performing these functions, to most consumers it appears that the primary purpose is to put it on pets/friends after enjoying a few drinks.

db has reached out to Borco to enquire as to whether the multiple uses of the hat were by design, or just a happy accident, but is yet to hear back. Whether or not it was intentional, the lid has certainly been a masterstroke in terms of creating potential for sustained viral marketing.
