Federer is celebrated for his class on the court and his disciplined style. Widely hailed as the greatest tennis player of all time, the longevity of his career is almost as remarkable as his talent. But his trademark restraint doesn’t mean that he won’t occasionally enjoy a hearty meal with a glass of something on the side.

Though he has conquered grass and and hard courts all over the world, when it comes to his favourite foods, the proud Swiss man serves up no surprises: “I have travelled so much and have been able to taste the most unbelievable specialties on all continents, but in the end I always come back to the simple things – very Swiss – I love fondue, raclette and rösti more than anything.”

And as for his favourite wine – he points to the 2009 Cos d’Estournel, from St Estèphe, Bordeaux. Berry Bros & Rudd describes the 2009 vintage as “astounding”, but for Federer it has personal significance: “It was an emotional year, we got married and the girls were born. At that time I bought many cases of this Bordeaux.” He also won the French Open and Wimbledon that year.

Additionally, Federer has expressed a growing fondness for Super Tuscans: “Guado al Tasso, Sassicaia, Tignanello and others.”

It is unclear how frequently Federer buys fine wine (the 2009 Cos d’Estournel retails at BBR for a starting price of GBP£280). But, as one of the highest paid athletes in the world (topping Forbes‘ 2020 sports rich list with USD$106million), money is certainly no object.

Then again, he is still an athlete and claims not to have been drunk since the aftermath of his 2005 US Open victory against Andre Agassi. “They said the bar was closing, so we ordered a few last shots, after which I was nauseous for days.” Though spirits are off his drinks list, his enthusiasm for wine endures.

In the interview, he also disclosed that he and his wife “like to drink Champagne to celebrate special moments.” As a Moët & Chandon brand ambassador, his preference probably won’t be a surprise. In 2018, the House released 20 magnums of 1998 vintage Champagne in honour of Federer’s 20-year career, valued EUR€19,998 each.
