Moth canned cocktails secures Tesco and Sainsbury’s listing
Moth, which stands for “Mix of total happiness”, was ranked as one of the best ready-to-drink cocktail brands in Waitrose last year. Now it is set to arrive in Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
From 1 May, 450 Sainsbury’s across the UK have been stocking the company’s Margarita, Mojito and Espresso Martini. The 900 Tesco stores featuring Moth on the shelves since 18 April have been selling these three plus the 14.9% ABV Negroni.
The Moth range also contains a 20% ABV old fashioned made in collaboration with the English Whisky Co. and Bob’s Bitters, which is currently available from Waitrose. Moth has been stocked in Waitrose since February 2021.
Rob Wallis, who co-founded Moth Drinks with Sam Hunt, said that “Moth Margarita is our best seller, closely followed by Moth Mojito which is the newest addition to our range.” The Margarita is made with Enemigo Tequila, whereas the Mojito uses Duppy Share Caribbean Rum.
Tommy Maiers, spirits category buying manager at Tesco, said that “with the boom in trend of cocktailing at home, we were on the lookout for great tasting cocktails without the hassle of making your own.”
Canned cocktails have certainly gained traction in recent years. The market share of ready-to-drink beverages in leading markets is expected to double to 8% by 2025 from the 2020 figure.
Wallis attributes the growing popularity of canned cocktails to consumers wanting drinks “without the faff…all people have to do is crack it open and drink it, or, if you’re at home, pour the drink over ice and enjoy.” He also confirms that more cocktails for the range are in development.
Well established drinks companies have started to notice the rising interest in RTDs: Kopparberg has recently made forays into the world of canned cocktails.
