Day 2 of Bike to Care en Bourgogne in pictures

The second and final leg of Bike to Care en Bourgogne is now complete, which means it’s time for more pictorial highlights from the Côte d’Or, taking in cartoon clothing, vitibots, and a feast of Burgundy and bananas.

Gearing up for day 2, which featured another 100km, this time through the Côtes de Nuits after yesterday’s circuit, where the Côtes de Beaune formed the backdrop.

Like day 1, Thibaut Gagey – deputy MD at Maison Louis Jadot, and Pierre-Henry’s son – took part in the challenge.

As did Will Harlan, who led a team from Harlan Estate, and may bring Bike to Care to California in two year’s time…

He was also the source of Harlan Estate 2018 and some exceptionally rare library stock of its 1993, both of which were served during dinner the night before.

As you can see from the menu, which also featured some outstanding grand cru Chablis from Jadot – in magnum.

And a delicious new Oregon Chardonnay from Resonance – Louis Jadot’s estate in the US wine region.

All of which followed a tour of Jadot’s circular winery, where Danish celebrity chef Casper Sobczyk gave new meaning to the smart-casual dress code.

Back to the biking, it wasn’t long before we were climbing as day two’s route took us towards Bouillon, passing the vines of the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, and up to a peak of around 600m.

First to the top – following a remarkable break-away sprint – was Michel from the three-star restaurant La Maison Trosgrois.

Not far behind was his colleague at the restaurant, along with Olivier Grivault (right) from team Jadot.

This was the view from the summit, looking over the vineyards of the Côtes de Nuits – Beaune was now behind us.

Once we’d raced into the valley, we made our way along pitted tracks towards the Château du Clos de Vougeot.

And on to Gevry-Chambertin

As well as this ‘vitibot’ called Bakus.

Which was taking care of the vines alongside the Château Corton C.

It was then time to refuel with Marsannay and bananas.

…along with cheese.

All served with the support of the Louis Jadot staff.

92km later, we’d finished the circuit.

With the staff from Harlan Estate being the first full team to finish.

Along with Edouard Bourgeois from Pressoir Wine in the US, even if he’d forfeited his achievement by failing to sport the right kit.

And Joanne Taylor-Stagg, general manager at The Athenaeum Hotel and Residences (captured by Danny Pecorelli, MD of Exclusive Collection hotels).
