Portugal’s Jorge Nunes wins WSET Vintners’ Cup
Jorge Nunes has become the first Portuguese person to win the prestigious WSET Vintners’ Cup.
Jorge was born in Vila Nova de Gaia in northern Portugal in 1982 and studied Oenology at UTAD (Vila Real University, Douro) and joined Symington Family Estates in 2007 as wine maker combined with wine tourism. Shortly afterwards Jorge joined the commercial team and in 2012 he moved to Hong Kong and assumed responsibility for the promotion and sale of all Symington family Ports and Portuguese wines in the Asia and Pacific region, where he has achieved impressive growth.
Each year the student with the highest aggregate mark worldwide – across all six units of the WSET Diploma in Wines and Spirits – is awarded The Vintners’ Cup.
The award was presented to Jorge by Paul Symington, Honorary President of the WSET, in London’s Guildhall. Paul Symington is the first Portuguese citizen and first wine producer to be Honorary President of the WSET.
Jorge Nunes said: “I was surprised but very proud to receive The Vintners’ Cup of 2021 and to be the first Portuguese person to have won since the award was created in 1946. This is especially important for my country, my region, and my family. Our wines are growing in reputation throughout the world, and I am glad to have contributed in this way.”
