Innis & Gunn revitalises its limited edition Laphoaig ‘Islay Whisky Cask’ beer

Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn has collaborated with Beam Suntory’s Laphroaig whisky to create another round of its limited-edition ‘Islay Whisky Cask’ beer.

The 7.4% ABV Scottish red ale, which has been matured for three months in rare Laphroaig single malt whisky quarter casks, was first released last year and quickly became the brewer’s fastest selling limited-edition, selling out in record time both through Innis & Gunn’s online shop and across international markets.

Speaking to db, Innis & Gunn founder and master brewer Dougal Gunn Sharp said: “The news that the limited-edition Islay Whisky Cask is available once again has been very warmly received and there is a high level of excitement ahead of its release next week. We loved brewing the first edition of Islay Whisky Cask in collaboration with Laphroaig and this year’s brew, using their rare quarter casks offers incredible depth of flavour and intensity. We’re expecting the 2022 release of our Islay Whisky Cask beer to be very popular when it goes on sale on Tuesday.”

For 2022, the brewer has been able to release more beer to meet demand, however, the rarity of the casks in which the beer has been matured means availability will still remain limited.

Gunn Sharp explained: “Innis & Gunn’s collaboration with Laphroaig last year was so well received, we knew we wanted to brew this inimitable beer again and make it even better, if we could.”

Laphroaig global senior director Chris Richardson added: “This second ‘Islay Whisky Cask’ release brings the influence of our quarter casks to life beautifully, balancing hints of peat smoke and brine with the deep malty notes of a Scottish red ale. It’s a new way to experience Laphroaig’s signature bold flavour that whisky fans and beer lovers alike are sure to enjoy.”

From 25 April, 330ml bottles of ‘Islay Whisky Cask’ beer will be available from the brewer’s online shop and will retail at £7 each. Each bottle comes with a gift carton designed by contemporary landscape artist Ellis O’Connor, making the drink an ideal gift for both beer and whisky lovers.
