Domaine Laroche launches wine in a box that doubles up as a bird house
Domaine Laroche has created a duo-use box for its wine which doubles up as a nesting box for birds, using the cork from the bottle as a perch.
The creation, which showcases its estate wines, has been made to celebrate six years as a partner of the LPO (League for the Protection of Birds).
The packaging, which becomes a nesting box by adding the cork from the bottle of wine, is part of an initiative to help birds to make homes in areas with sustained human activity.
It has been especially designed for birds that people can find in their gardens and upon balconies in France and in Europe.
Amélie Tupinier, in charge of sustainable viticulture at Domaine Laroche said: “A dozen nesting boxes have been installed for new species such as the Robin Redbreast , the Blue Tit and the Great Tit to fight against bud-eating and preserve biodiversity.”
The nesting box should be installed between 1.5m and 3m high, ideally with a south-eastern to easterly orientation and avoiding direct sunshine. The best time to install it is from February onwards for occupation from March to July.
In db’s recent Green Awards, Redbreast Irish Whiskey won the ‘Best innovation in Packaging Award’ for its bottle which doubles up as a bird feeder. Judges praised it for being recyclable and genuinely useful, as well as feeling relevant for the brand.
