Woman gets waitress fired after ‘inappropriate’ compliment about husband’s eyes

A woman has sparked a heated debate online by revealing she inadvertently got a waitress fired, after the server in question gave her husband “inappropriate” compliments during a meal.

waitress fired inappropriate compliment

It’s one thing to be friendly and amiable during dinner service, but another thing entirely to seemingly hit on someone’s husband right in front of them during a meal.

If a recent Reddit thread is anything to go by, though, that is exactly what happened at one restaurant, in a scenario that unfortunately lead to the waitress in question getting fired.

Published on Reddit’s Am I The A**Hole (AITA) forum, an anonymous Redditor told her story.

The post was titled “AITA for leaving a bad review on a diner and ruining the waitress’ life just because she was ‘complementing’ my husband’s eyes? [sic]”.

The woman revealed in the post that she and her husband, along with her in-laws, were celebrating her husband’s birthday at a restaurant when she noticed the waitress in question apparently making eyes at her partner.

“Throughtout the entire celebration, this 20ish waitress who served our table kept acting strange, she didn’t take her eyes off my husband and threw some inappropriate comments at him and infront of us as she came and went.

“I was feeling uncomfortable, but decided to not make a scene hoping she’d stop but when she brought the drinks, She puts them on the table, leans close enough towards my husband thinking no one would hear but we heard what she said and it was “the sparkle of those eyes is igniting me!” (PS my husband has electric-blue eyes). I was flabergasted, truly! I couldn’t believe she just said that!

“I told her “you know what? You’re being inappropriate right now, and you need to stop”. She then smug smiled then turned around and walked away. I got weird looks from my inlaws and it was AWEFUL. [sic]”

She revealed that when she returned home, she left a bad review for the restaurant online, and was subsequently contacted by the establishment’s management to ask “what it’d take for [her] to take it down”. She replied that she would like to see some consequences for the waitress.

“He calls back to tell me he just fired her”.

“I’m contacted by the waitress on my SM telling me that she didn’t mean to cause disturbance and was just “complimenting” my husband’s eyes, but I ruined her career and caused her to potentially lose her apartment and become homeless after getting fired from the diner and being unable to pay rent. I don’t respond but my inlaws point out that I overreacted and this stuff happen too often at diners and I just caused irreparable damage to this young lady’s life over “nothing”. Also MIL [mother-in-law] said that I must’ve done this because I felt jealous of the waitress.”

In an update at the bottom of the post, the woman reiterates that she had no intention of getting the waitress fired.

Commenters were somewhat torn over the series of events. One Redditor wrote, “If it was a male server saying something like that to a female patron and a male server being weird and creepy the whole time, no one would have a problem with what you said. You didn’t do anything.”

A second concurred, adding, “Yeah it’s not like she said “wow you have freaky pretty eyes by the way!” To me, that’d be okay.

Whispering “your eyes ignite me” is a whole different deal.”

However, another commenter felt differently, writing “I’m going to be honest this definitely seems like a “there’s two sides to every story” situation.”

Despite the nature of this story, it’s clear that hospitality workers are often forced to put up with a lot during their shifts. This story of a man who played a “cruel” tipping game with his server is certainly an example of that.
