DO Rueda kicks off 2022 with return to ‘historic’ growth

DO Rueda has kicked off 2022 with a return to its historic upward sales trend, with 22.5% cumulative growth compared to the previous year.

The Destination of Origin has shattered its previous sales record by delivering 101,818,123 back labels in 2021, a figure that represents cumulative growth of 22.5%.

The results are especially satisfying for DO Rueda after the considerable disruptions to the HoReCa channel during the pandemic.

“We have seen tremendous recovery since March of this year, with records every month until December, when we finished 2021 with higher sales than in any previous Rueda year”, said Jesús
González Huerta, acting president of C.R.D.O. Rueda. “In fact, we set an absolute record for year-on-year sales: over 101 million bottles were sold in the last 12 months”, he added.

Of the 101,818,123 back labels delivered in 2021, 99.97% were white wine, an percentage that comprises some 101,604,570 back labels.

204,384 back labels were for for Gran Vino de Rueda – a new category added in 2021 for wines grown in vineyards that are more than 30 years old and with low yields.

González attributes the success of the past year to “the consumers, who continue to trust and choose the wines from our Designation of Origin, and to the work of the wineries and winegrowers on their continuous quest for the highest quality”.

He sees 2022 as a challenging year for sales growth largely due to supply chain issues that have been well documented across many sectors, and the emergence of the Omicron coronavirus variant. “But we are confident that we will overcome them”, González added.
