Fourcade had worked for Marks & Spencer for 35 years where he was a senior wine buyer, and had contributed enormously to the supermarket’s image as a high-quality and good-value source of wine.

He was described by the retailer in a statement on 2 September as a “highly respected and admired figure in the UK and French wine trade with exceptionally strong relationships across the supply base.”

He was also called “a much loved member of the wine team”.

Stuart Machin, who is managing director of M&S Food, said “We are truly lucky that such a specialist in his field chose to spend the majority of his career here with us.”

He added, “Yves leaves a lasting legacy in the M&S Food Group and he will be greatly missed by us all”.
