Almaviva releases 2019 as ‘worthy successor’ to ‘spectacular’ 2018
Almaviva 2019 has been released today by La Place de Bordeaux with the vintage described as a “worthy successor” to the “spectacular” 2018.
The Chilean fine wine – a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend from a single estate in the Puente Alto – follows the much-lauded 2018, which was described as “spectacular” by the winemaker, Michel Friou.
Speaking to the drinks business last week, Almaviva managing director Manuel Louzada said that Friou was delighted with this year’s release, calling it a “worthy successor” to the 2018, which was declared an “exceptional” year, and one of the most spectacular vintages ever seen in Chile.
Meanwhile, James Suckling described the 2019 vintage as “extremely perfumed”, awarding it 97 points. He gave the 2017 vintage of Almaviva a ‘perfect’ 100 points, naming it his “wine of the decade”, and the 2018 release 98 points, calling it “a joy to taste”.
Considering the pricing, Liv-ex noted on its type-pad this morning that Almaviva 2019 has been released for €105 per bottle ex-négociant, which is 9.3% more than the opening price of the 2018, while Liv-ex also recorded that the Chilean label is being offered by by merchants for around £1,296 per 12-bottle case for the 2019, which is 8% more than the current Market Price of the 2018 (£1,200).
Liv-ex has suggested that the 2018 Almaviva “looks good value versus today’s release; it has a slightly higher score than the 2019 and is almost £100 cheaper per case.”
It was also observed that the 2016 at £1,245 per case also “looks good value” considering it has the same score from The Wine Advocate.
