You can now buy a ‘wine wand’ that claims to reduce your hangover
If you’re sick of waking up with a pounding head, faint sense of nausea and dry mouth, then a £3 wine wand could be the product for you, with its ambitious claim to reduce your hangover.
Yes, as the happy return of pubs, bars and restaurants to our lives has brought colour and enjoyment rarely found during lockdown, it has also ushered in with it a few 10/10 hangovers.
But if you’ve been struggling with a sore head in recent days, then a product that’s selling on Amazon for just £3 is claiming that it can help you out.
Discover how to taste any wine without having to open the botte:
The ‘wine wand’ claims to work by removing histamines and sulphites from the wine. According to a product description:
“No other wine filter removes BOTH the histamines and sulfite preservatives that trigger the most common wine sensitivities. The Wand works on ALL red, white and sparkling wines WITHOUT changing the natural taste, aromas or color of the wine.”
The conveniently-sized wine wands are portable, “perfect for social gatherings, celebrations and holidays”, per a product description.
Reviews of the wine wand on Amazon have been decidedly mixed.
Some less enamoured customers claimed that the product had not worked properly for them.
“As someone with histamine problems (mast cell) this didn’t work at all. I was so excited to try it that I was prepared to pay £20 at the idea of being able to have wine again. Doesn’t work, money down the drain with the wine.” One wrote in a one-star review.
“Really didn’t make any difference at all for me. Very disappointed given the price. Hopefully it will be effective for someone else who purchases it.” Another added.
However several other reviewers were more upbeat.
“This product works! No headache/migraine after drinking wine! I can finally enjoy a glass of wine with a meal. Only drawback is the price; too expensive to use often and one wine wand only gets rid of “nasties” from 60 fluid oz of wine which isn’t that much! But definitely worth it for special occasions,” one wrote.
“Was there pleasantly surprised that this actually works ! No more sulphur headache / red flushed face. A marvellous product.” Another happy customer added.
Previous research has suggested that worrying about your hangover can actually make it worse.
The study’s conclusions revealed a “significant relationship” between catastrophising and hangover severity scores. Moreover, it showed that the score obtained from the ‘catastrophizing questions’ was a better indicator of the perceived hangover severity than the estimated blood alcohol level.
