Chinese court reveals details of fake Cognac ring
The Intermediate People’s Court of Qingyuan City in Guangdong Province, China has revealed the details of a luxury Cognac counterfeiting case.
In 2016, the gang of fraudsters the case hinged on purchased a range of equipment including a sealing machine, bottling machine, laser printer, gum pigments, packaging boxes, labels, and bottle caps.
They also collected empty bottles of Hennessy, Martell, Remy Martin and other famous spirit brands from hotels.
To concoct their fake booze they rebottled the empty branded bottles with cheap bulk-purchased Arge brandy, blended with different portions of caramel colouring and longan water according to the taste and colour of different products.
The fake spirit bottles were then packaged in boxes with codes and sold to retailers and merchants in Yingde City, Yangshan County and other places, and the sales amount was reported to be 6.53 million RMB.
The gang of eight defendants was busted in July 2019 and the court announced the acts have constituted the crime of producing and selling counterfeits and inferior products. They were sentenced to 2 to 15 years in prison and fined 200,000 to 4 million RMB.
