Catena is releasing the Malbec Argentino 2019 vintage to coincide with Malbec World Day on Saturday 17 April with a very special label that pays tribute to the variety’s history in France and journey in Argentina.

Per a press release, the striking design is inspired by the 2,000-year history of Malbec, “told through four symbolic women (including Madame Phylloxera!) across the different eras: Eleanor of Aquitaine (12th Century), The Immigrant (Argentina 18-19th Century), Phylloxera (19th Century France), Back to Argentina the Renaissance of Malbec by the Catena family (20th Century).”

“In this difficult time for the whole world, we want to specially celebrate the Malbec grape for its resiliency over the last 2,000 years. Although Malbec almost became extinct in Europe after phylloxera at the end of the 19th Century, it has since been miraculously and gloriously reborn in Argentina.” Said Dr. Laura Catena Managing Director, Bodega Catena Zapata.

“The 2019 vintage of Malbec Argentino is here to help us celebrate a plant’s resiliency, in a year when we are all looking for hope. Our family has farmed Malbec in Argentina for almost 120 years, preserving ancient massale selections and finding one-of-a kind high-altitude terroirs. We are very grateful. Happy Malbec World day, April 17, to all our friends and to Malbec drinkers around the world!”

The wine itself is a pure Malbec from old vines in the high-altitude Catena Zapata family vineyards. It is distributed by Bibendum Wine in the UK, aimed at high-end independent and premium on trade venues.

Retail pricing worldwide ranges from £85-£105.
