Constellation-backed Canopy Growth unveils CBD drinks brand in US
Canadian cannabis company Canopy Growth, which is part-owned by Constellation Brands, has launched its first CBD-infused sparkling water brand called Quatreau in the US.
Quatreau, which is available in four flavour variants, contains 20mg of US-grown, hemp-based CBD in each can. SKUs include Cucumber & Mint, Passionfruit & Guava, Ginger & Lime, and Blueberry & Acai.
Each 12-ounce can has a recommended sale price of US$3.99, and will be sold in 12-packs. The cans will be sold distributed in the US through Canopy’s e-commerce hub shopcanopy.com.
The brand was first launched in Canada last year.
Canopy Growth president and chief product officer Rade Kovacevic said Quatreau is now the market-leading CBD-infused drinks brand in Canada.
“Beverages are fueling growth in the CBD category and we believe this product will resonate with US consumers looking for a naturally flavoured, zero sugar option,” he added.
The launch of Quatreau follows the unveiling of CBD drinks brands by other large drinks groups including Molson Coors and Heineken. Molson Coors announced news of a joint venture with cannabis company Hexo Corp last year called Truss Beverage Co. The tie-up saw the two companies release a line of CBD and THC-infused sparkling waters in Canada. Meanwhile Heineken launched an IPA-inspired, THC-infused sparkling water in the US in 2018.
Back in 2018, the world’s largest brewer AB InBev announced a joint venture with cannabis company Tilray to research the potential for cannabis-infused drinks. Drinks distributor Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits and US multi-state wholesaler Breakthru Beverage have also invested in the sector.
The global cannabis drinks market has been growing rapidly in recent years and is expected to be worth some US$2.8 billion by 2025, according to Grand View Research. Constellation backed the industry relatively early, taking a 9.9% stake in Canopy Growth in 2017. This has increased to a 38.6% stake, with the potential to raise it to a majority 55.8%.
