And here are the recommendations of our editor-in-chief, Patrick Schmitt MW, who has put together some suggestions for some delicious tipples to enjoy for Mother’s Day.

Sparkling Love by Léoube

  • Producer: Léoube
  • Region: Provence
  • Country: France
  • Residual sugar level: Brut, 7g/l
  • Grape varieties: Grenache 60%, Cinsault 40%
  • ABV: 12.5%
  • Vintage: NV
  • UK retail price: £25
  • Medal: Gold – The Spring Tasting 2021

Patrick says: “Few bottles are better at conveying affection than Sparkling Love by Léoube, but it’s more than just a pretty package with a suitable name – it’s a fantastic fizz too. Made by organic, British-owned, Provençal estate Chåteau Léoube, it picked up one of the few Gold medals in our most recent blind sampling competition, The Spring Tasting, where it impressed me for its creamy texture and peach and red berry fruit flavours, along with fresh, dry, clean finish.”

Bottega Gold Prosecco DOC

  • Producer: Bottega
  • Residual sugar level: Brut, 11g/l
  • Vintage: NV
  • UK retail price: £15-£20
  • Medal: Gold – The Prosecco Masters 2020

Patrick says: “Housed in a gold-coloured bottle, no Prosecco makes a stronger visual statement than Bottega. But don’t think that it’s all style over substance, as this fizz has repeatedly proven to be a gold-quality product too, with plenty of peachy fruit, a lovely orange zest lift, and a persistent, dry finish. It’s a fruity but not too sweet style of Prosecco with masses of freshness.”

Tua Rosa IGT Toscana, Italy, 2019

  • Producer: Sensi Vigne E Vini S.R.L
  • Region: Tuscany
  • Country: Italy
  • Grape varieties: Sangiovese 100%
  • ABV: 12.5%
  • Vintage: 2019
  • UK retail price: Under £10
  • Medal: Gold – The Spring Tasting 2021

Patrick says: “While I continue to be impressed by the quality of Provençal rosés at our tastings, I’m recommending this pink Sangiovese from Italy because it offers masses of joy for a small amount of cash. OK, it has a touch of residual sugar (5g/l), but that provides texture, not sweetness, and there’s so much juicy cherry fruit and fresh salty interest that I challenge you – or your mother – to drink this at a pace that’s anything other than dangerously fast for something with more than 12% ABV.”

And last but not least… This red wine stain remover, in case it all goes wrong and spillages occur

We’ve all been there.

With just enough time to snag the perfect gift for the wine lover in your life this Mother’s Day, here’s wishing you all a happy and fruitful day.
