117-year-old nun celebrates beating Covid with Champagne

French nun Sister André celebrated her 117^th birthday and beating the coronavirus on Thursday with a well deserved flute of Champagne and a glass of Port.

As reported by The New York Times, Sister André is the oldest person in Europe and has lived through two world wars and the 1918 flu pandemic.

A resident of Ste. Catherine Labouré nursing home in Toulon, southeastern France, Sister André recently recovered from the coronavirus in self isolation. According to The New York Times, the nun had no strong symptoms, she just felt a little off colour and slept more than usual.

To celebrate the double whammy of beating Covid and turning 117, Sister André was treated to a blowout meal that began with a glass of Port followed by foie gras with hot figs, then roasted capon with mushrooms, progressing to a cheese platter including Roquefort and goat’s cheese enjoyed with a glass or two of red.

Ending her birthday feast in style, Sister André then tucked into a raspberry and peach baked Alaska with a glass of Champagne.

Born Lucile Randon in 1904, Randon took the ecclesiastical title of Sister André in 1944 when she joined a Catholic charitable order.
