Japan’s Mos Burger offers ‘sake’ milkshake
Dassai, one of the world famous sake labels made by Yamaguchi-based Asahi Shuzo sake brewery, has teamed up with Japanese fast food chain Mos Burger to release a brand new Dassai sake-flavoured milkshake.
As the second largest burger chan in Japan after Mcdonald’s, this is the first time Mos Burger has collaborated with a sake brewer. The non-alcoholic milkshake is based on the fast-food chain’s vanilla shake, but twisted with sake flavour.
The shake is made with the brewery’s ‘amazake‘, a traditional alcohol-free sweet beverage that’s created by mixing steamed white rice and water with the same kome koji (rice malt) used for the rice fermentation process in the production of Dassai sake, which is most famous for its fine polishing ratio.
The Dassai amazake also uses Yamada Nishiki rice as base ingredients, and has been polished down to 50% of its original grain to give the smooth sweetness of the koji and rice aroma. Even though it is alcohol free, its flavour profile is said to be similar to that of sake.
Coming in either a small size for JPY334 (£2.34) or medium size for JPY399 (£2.80), the new shake is scheduled to be available at Mos Burger stores nationwide from 26 December until early February 2021.
Dassai is one of the sake labels actively looking for collaborations with restaurants. In 2018, the brand joined hands with culinary legend Joël Robuchon to open restaurant and tea salon La Boutique Dassaï Joël Robuchon in Paris.
