Zachys to sell barrel of Burgundy at London sale
Auctioneer Zachys is to sell a barrel of Burgundy at its London sale next month, the only barrel of 2019 Chambolle Musigny ‘Les Sentiers’ produced by Domaine Fourrier.
Following on from its first London sale in September, the auction house is following up with a multi-vendor sale on 14 November.
Featuring an array of fine wines from the likes of Petrus, Cheval Blanc, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Armand Rousseau, Domaine Leroy, Rene Engel, Raveneau and Coche Dury, there are also a number of special lots as well.
These include a rare collection of white wines from Domaine Arnaud Ente, director consignments from the cellars of Emidio Pepe – comprising three 4.5L bottles of 1985 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the first ever ‘single vineyard’ bottling of 2015 Montepulciano and a ‘Cerasuolo’ which is never exported – as well as large formats and library bottlings from Marchesi Antinori.
The real highlight of the sale, however, is the single barrel of 2019 Chambolle Musigny ‘Les Sentiers’ from Domaine Fourrier.
Les Sentiers is the domaine’s smallest parcel, a mere 0.046 hectares, located next to the grand cru Bonnes Mares.
Fourrier only makes one 228L barrel of this cuvée on average each vintage, bottles it in magnums and does not make them available for public sale.
This is an extremely rare, almost one off, opportunity therefore to acquire the entirety of the 2019 production and have it bottled in the format of the buyer’s choice. The pre-sale low estimate for the barrel is £90,000.
In addition to wine there are also some notable spirits consignments. Chief among these is collection of aged Chartreuse spanning over 100 years (one bottle of ‘Jaune Voiron’ is dated 1840-1869) and four rare bottles of Japanese whisky Karuizawa from the ‘Pearl Geisha’ collection which have a combined low estimate of £70,000.
Jeff Zacharia, president of Zachys commented: “Our ability to switch to online auctions and the popularity of our unique studio sales means this year has been tremendously successful, despite the global pandemic. The highlight was bringing the Zachys’ business to London for the first time with our debut European auction of wines from the celebrated Enoteca Pinchiorri cellar. We’re delighted to be able to offer Zachys’ clients some new, incredible lots in our November sale.’’
Christy Erickson, head of Europe for Zachys, said: “We were thrilled with the success of our London launch earlier this year and our first multi-vendor sale offers a unique collection of exquisite wines, as well as the first ever barrel of Burgundy to be sold at auction. Our London debut represented a record for European participation, and we look forward to hosting many more auctions from Europe to service our clientele around the globe.’’
