Louis Pommery gears up for English Wine Week
Gold medal-winning fizz from The Global Sparkling Masters, Louis Pommery England, is gearing up for this month’s English Wine Week.
Although the week-long celebration of all things vinous and English normally takes place at the end of May, this year it will take place from 20-28 June, and will, once more, promote the UK’s 700 vineyards and 160 wineries.
Among the producers taking part in English Wine Week will be Vranken-Pommery, the first Champagne house to release an English sparkling wine.
Called Louis Pommery England, the fizz has been made at Hattingley Valley estate’s facilities since 2014, and is currently produced under the watchful eye of Clément Pierlot, cellar master of Champagne Pommery.
Since then, a 40-hectare site called Pinglestone in Alresford, Hampshire has been planted where the first Louis Pommery grapes will be harvested this coming Autumn.
The current Louis Pommery English sparkling wine comes from very specific Hampshire soils very close to Winchester, where chalk is the dominant element of the soil.
Based on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the fizz picked up a Gold medal in the 2019 edition of The Global Sparkling Masters, with the judges praising its pleasing combination of green apple, fresh lemon and lime, along with honeyed stone fruits and creamy-textured bubbles.
Julien Lonneux, Vranken Pommery UK CEO, commented: “We are especially proud of Louis Pommery England, which was awarded Gold at the prestigious Global Sparkling Masters last year. The award highlights the exceptional quality of English grapes and winemaking used to create this unique English sparkling wine.”
