Independent Wine reveals what UK consumers should pay for a Barolo

Italian specialist online retailer Independent Wine has revealed its top tips for buying a Barolo in the UK that presents good value for money.

The retailer researched and compiled a list of over 100 Barolos available in the UK in an attempt to uncover the price consumers should be paying for the northern Italian wine.

Based on its findings, the retailer grouped the Barolo into three price tiers: £16-20 (wines which are mainly found in supermarkets and produced by cooperatives); £30-75 (wines produced in smaller volumes, often by family-owned vineyards); and £75-220 (high-end, “connoisseur Barolo”).

Having evaluated the wine’s quality and price, the retailer concluded that wine from the middle pricing category presented the best value for money.

It stated: “Most casual drinkers don’t have hundreds to spend on a connoisseur Barolo, and the experience of supermarket Barolo is unlikely to meet expectations. If you really want to get your money’s worth, it’s best to focus on the middle category – small-volume Barolo carefully crafted at family-run wineries. This category offers the right level of quality for the right price.”

The retailer noted that pricing is dependent on the location and orientation of the vineyard, the brand name, how old the wine is, whether it has received any favourable comments from critics, the vintage, and the number of bottles produced.

It gave two examples of wineries it represents, which it feels presents good value for money.

These include Francone Barolo, which makes wines from grapes grown in the crus of La Morra and Monforte d’Alba. The fourth-generation owned family winery is currently selling its 2015 vintage for £34.95 and the 2016 for £32.56. Barolo Castelletto, also based in Monforte d’Alba, is owned by the well-known Gussalli Beretta family, and is currently selling its 2015 vintage for £39.26.

Below is the table of prices for Barolo DOCG wines sold in the UK in 2020, compiled by Independent Wine.
