Shift work and automisation keeps Spanish wine producer in business
Major Spanish wine producer Marqués de Cáceres has adapted its approach to production to ensure that it is able to supply the market during the Covid-19 crisis.

In a message sent to the drinks business this morning, the famous name in Spain, which has facilities in Rioja, Rueda, and Ribera del Duero, said that by working “together” the wine business would be “victorious” in the face of the viral pandemic that’s creating a lock down in Europe, while insisting that it was following “strict protocols instructed by Government officials” to ensure the “safety and security of employees”.
It also expressed its gratitude to those in Spain who work in the National Health System, as well as the police, armed forces, and all the employees that are helping to maintain supermarkets open, along with those driving trucks and supporting logistics to ensure that food and medical supplies reach their destinations.
In terms of its own business, Marqués de Cáceres export manager, Antonio Alvarez, told db that the producer was “working as usual under safe conditions”.
He said that it has been possible to service its customers by “working in shifts with smaller teams to avoid unnecessary contact.”
He also noted that production had been made possible because its wineries are “very automised”, which has meant that “contact between employees is very easy to prevent.”
As for the level of demand for Marqués de Cáceres wines, he observed an increase relative to last year for the Spanish producer’s retail customers, although there has been an inevitable dramatic fall-off in wine sales to the on-trade in Spain due to the lock down.
Marqués de Cáceres is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, having been founded by Enrique Forner in 1970. His daughter, Cristina, runs the business today, and has marked the milestone year with the completion of an entirely new winery in Ribera del Duero, called Bodegas Finca La Capilla.
