Rioja’s Haro hit by coronavirus outbreak
The town of Haro in the northwest of Rioja has been hit by the coronavirus, with dozens of cases of Covid-19 being reported and residents told to stay at home.

As reported by Harpers, residents of Haro in Rioja Alta have been told to stay indoors following an outbreak of coronavirus in the town.
The spread of the virus in Haro has been traced to a funeral held in the neighbouring city of Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque country two weeks ago, with 60 cases reported among those who attended the service.
Haro is home to leading wineries like Lopez de Heredia
According to Harpers, 39 cases of coronavirus have been reported in Haro, which is home to a number of leading Rioja wineries, including Lopez de Heredia, La Rioja Alta, Muga and Roda. Another 25 cases have been confirmed in the Basque country.
Over 1,200 people in Spain have tested positive for the virus, with the death toll at 29.
From tomorrow over 1.4 million students and 95,000 teachers will stay home from schools in Madrid, while universities in the Basque Country have been closed.
Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, held crunch talks in Madrid yesterday as he outlined his government’s “shock therapy plan” in response to the virus.
Yesterday Italy’s 60 million residents were on lockdown in an attempt to contain the virus, with 9,172 cases having been reported in the country, leading to 463 deaths.
The coronavirus has led to the cancellation of major international drinks events, including ProWein, which was due to take place in Dusseldorf next week, and Vinitaly in Verona, which was scheduled for April.
The virus is also wreaking havoc on the global economy. Yesterday shares around the world plunged to their lowest point since the global financial crisis a decade ago, with London’s shares index seeing an 8% fall in value.
In what has been dubbed ‘Black Monday’, the Dow Jones in the US fell by 7.8%, while the price of oil plunged due to a row between Russia and Saudi Arabia.
