London wine shop expands with fourth shop and bar

London wine shop, The Good Wine Shop, is set to open its fourth site, a shop and wine bar in Teddington later this month.

The new shop, which is on the site of former indie merchant, Famous Wines, will stock around 750 wines, including fine and rare wines from small and family-owned producers, craft beers and artisan spirits, and will offer a rotating by-the-glass wine list of three whites, three reds and sparkling wine each month, along with bar snacks.Customers can take any bottle from the shelf and drink in for the cost of the bottle plus a £10 corkage charge.

The new site will also host bespoke, private tasting sessions for small groups, in its vaulted wine cellar, which can be hired for private events.

The retailer has been trading for nearly 20 years and already has shops in Kew, Chiswick and Richmond Hill – which opened last November in a former Oddbins store  – and attracts customers from South West London, including Sheen, Richmond, Isleworth, Teddington and the surrounding areas.

Owner Mark Wrigglesworth said the team had been looking for the right site in Teddington “for years”.

“It’s a thriving town with a wonderful community and there is a great vibe among local business owners – we are delighted that the perfect opportunity has finally come along,” he said. “We have an exciting portfolio of quality wines from lesser-known producers and family-owned wineries around the globe; wines made by real people who have great stories to tell.”

Wrigglesworth told db that although the on-premise was a nice addition to the business and had continued to perform well in a challenging environment, being particularly popular in Kew and the new Richmond Hill shop. 

“The on-trade has grown from a zero base doubling each year since inception to between 5-7% last year and we expect it will be 7.5% at our busiest sites this year,” he added.  The off-trade has continued to perform well in a challenging environment, with some of our less mature sites growing nicely. The new sites will obviously provide further momentum but our unique offering seems to resonate with the audience we have here in south west London, hence we are taking the opportunities when great sites become available to expand on our own terms.

The business was predominantly still a retail business, he added.
