Global Masters Wine of the Week: Château de Pommard Clos Marey-Monge
Every week we select a wine that picked up either a Gold or Master from our competition series, and tell you why the judges loved it. Enter the Global Masters and this could be your wine.
It’s Bourgogne week, and what better way to kick it off than with this belter of a Burgundy that has picked up not one, not two, but three top awards in our Pinot Noir Masters throughout the years.
This wine from historic estate Château de Pommard is so well regarded, the vineyard from which the grapes are sourced has its own Wikipedia page.
The 2013 and 2014 vintages of this wine both picked up Master medals in our Pinot Noir Masters in 2017, while the 2016 scooped a Gold medal in our competition last year. At around £100 a pop, it’s not cheap, but that is to be expected from a wine that comes from land registered as a UNESCO Heritage site since 2015.
Our judges found the nose on this wine, particularly the 2016, was intense and youthful, with all the hallmarks of Burgundian red; violets, fresh strawberries, red plums and cinnamon.
The palate is concentrated, but also well-rounded, with velvety tannins ironed out by close to two years in oak barrels, a fresh but not overpowering acidity, and a finish that doesn’t quit.
The floral and fruity aromas we’ve come to know and love in good Burgundy make this perfectly pleasant to drink now, but you could stash it away in your cellar for a few years and enjoy the enhanced complexity that comes from fully mature top-quality Pinot.
