Chandon China releases sparkling red wine
Chandon China, Moët Hennessy’s sparkling wine operation in Ningxia, has been actively designing products specially for the Chinese market. Shortly after the launch of Chandon Me, the first sparkling wine that can be enjoyed at room temperature, the house has created now launched a red sparkling wine as well.
Debuted this September right before the mid-autumn Festival, Chandon Xi (禧, meaning blissful and auspicious) is the first demi-sec red sparkling wine the winery has produced.
The sparkling wine is made from a blend of Pinot Noir, Syrah and Marselan and has been aged on its lees for 14 months. It comes with a dosage of 40g/l and 13.5% abv.
Su Long, estate manager at Chandon China, said: “Our aim is to produce a sparkling wine that captures the freshness of the grapes with pungent and pronounced red berry notes.”
Su said the wine is exclusive to the Chinese market and mainly distributed via on-trade channels, “the high level of sweetness and round mouthfeel do not only make the wine appealing for Chinese drinkers, but also marry well with an array of Chinese regional cuisine. After the first launch, we received exceptional positive feedback from Guangdong province.”
China is known as a red wine driven market; as red is an auspicious colour in Chinese culture symbolising luck and joy. Suggested on its wine label and marketing material, Chandon Xi is positioned as a wine for festive celebrations, family reunions, romantic occasions and wedding parties.
Chandon Me Rosé and Chandon Me
This, once again, reflects the effort of the house to create products that speak to the market. Chandon Me, a demi-sec sparkling wine dedicated to the Chinese market, has reportedly achieved great success since its launch in 2017. The wine is made with high dosage and the additional claim that the wine can be enjoyed at room temperature.
Located in Helan Mountain East in the northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Domaine Chandon is China’s first winery focused on premium sparkling wine production. The winery owns over 60 hectares of vineyard planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
