Hong Kong wine festival cancelled over political protests
Initially scheduled to run from 31 October to 3 November, the 11th edition of Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival has been called off by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) due to the recent political protests.
Debuted in 2009, the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival is one of the largest consumer wine and food events in Asia.
Last year the event attracted 168,000 visitors with 452 wine & food booths and wineries from 33 countries & regions.
HKTB chairman Dr YK Pang said: “The decision to cancel the event was certainly not an easy one. It enjoys huge popularity among local residents and visitors, and great support from local and international partners, sponsors and exhibitors.
“However, in view of unforeseen circumstances in the coming weeks, it would be challenging to us to ensure the smooth running of the event, so we have decided to cancel the mega event.”
HKTB said the safety of the participants, exhibitors and staff members at there have been frequent protests near the event venue (the Central Harbourfront Event Space, which is situated next to the government headquarters, was its priority. Given the large number of participants at the event, in the event of any conflict in the vicinity, it would be difficult to ensure all the participants could leave the venue safely within a short time.
Dr Pang added,“depending on the feasibility of an appropriate time and venue, we are diligently exploring the possibility of organising a similar event in the first half of next year for locals and visitors to enjoy this highly anticipated culinary event twice next year.”
All exhibitors of the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival will get a full refund of their enrolment fee by the end of November 2019 and enjoy a 20% discount for next year’s event. HKTB is going to organise the “Hong Kong Great November Feast” next month to showcase various gastronomic experiences in Hong Kong. There are plans to feature the exhibitors of the Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival in the promotion as well. Further details will be announced in due course.
