Spar boosts wine sales with new Wine Club for retailers

UK convenience group Spar UK has rolled out a new wine club to incentivise its retailers and uncork greater wine sales.

The Wine Club was launched at an event in Manchester this month, with 30 independent retailers

The symbol group, which does not operate its own stores but supplies hundreds of independent convenience shops operating under the Spar fascia, has launched the group with 30 retailers, who will stock the core range and support Spar’s national wine promotions as well as taking part in various Wine Club activities.

The club, which aims to boost the wine credentials of Spar’s stores, will enable the retailers to take part in specialist wine training to boost sales and participate in benchmarking with Spar’s Master of Wine, Philippa Carr, while also offering exclusive invitations to consumer and trade wine shows and the opportunity to visit leading suppliers and vineyards across the world.

The aim, the retailer said, was to raise the quality credentials of Spar’s wine range, build sales in the wider wine category, and share best practice amongst retailers.

If it goes well, the wine club will be opened to more of the group’s retailers in 2020.

Carr, who joined the symbol group in 2017 from Asda, said she was thrilled to support the initiative.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for independent Spar retailers who are serious about increasing their wine sales,” she said.

“To have so many passionate retailers from Cornwall to Inverness supporting the growth of SPAR Brand wines is something we are really proud of.”

Earlier this year, the retailer included its best-selling Rios de los Andes Reserve Malbec (RRP £7) in its Love It and List it campaign for members, a shortlist of 15 stand-out products to act as the focus of its summer campaign, which saw a 15% reduction in wholesale price in order to incentivise and reward loyal retailers.

There are more than 2,300 independent retailers within the Spar symbol group, and a wine range of around 150 wines, a third of which are own label wines, from its entry-level Taste and Varietal ranges to the recently expanded Regional Selection.

Spar’s annual wine retail sales amounted to £110m in 2016.
