Napa producer introduces new ‘cult Cab’

A boutique producer in the Napa Valley has launched a new limited edition Cabernet Sauvignon, of just 300 magnums priced at US$3,500 each, with the owner declaring it to be, “wild energy, a leopard”.

Lawrence Fairchild with a bottle of ‘Perrarus’

Called ‘Perrarus’ – Latin for “exceptional” – the wine is the latest ‘cult Cab’ from Lawrence Fairchild’s Stones Wine project and has reportedly taken four years to bring to fruition.

The first vintage is from Napa’s widely lauded 2015 harvest and the wine is a barrel selection from 10 casks that normally go into making the single vineyard expressions ‘Stones No.1’, ‘No.2’ and ‘No.3’ – which are made from plots at Saint Helena, Prtichard Hill and Oakville Tench respectively.

Each of the magnums the wine is being bottled in was hand-blown and bears a custom made astrolabe marking the time of the harvest.

The launch of Perrarus might normally be viewed as the coming of another expensive ‘super wine’ for the super rich but it is at least considerably enlivened by some of Fairchild’s madly grandiose proclamations and tasting notes.

To begin with Perrarus has been billed as the “the Ferrari or Patek Philippe of wines”, while Fairchild’s tasting note describes it as “an experience, not a taste. Chocolate, caramel, chewy in the mouth. Fire and char. Like the best cigar in the world, the rarest spice. It’s wild energy, a leopard.”

The bottles will be allocated at random to members of the Fairchild Wines mailing list on 23 September (with delivery in December) at a price of $3,500 each.

Fairchild has explained: “We have opted for the lottery so that we can offer it to members as fairly as possible while keeping the integrity of its exclusivity.”

As well as the Stones project, Fairchild and his winemaker Philippe Melka are also behind the ‘G-III’ and ‘Sigaro’ wines which regularly receive glowing plaudits from critics such as Robert Parker and Jeb Dunnuck.

A 2016 vintage of Perrarus has been confirmed.

Sounds ridiculous and disgusting. ‘Fire and char’ sounds ,like an ashtray. Like the last days of the Roman Empire.

This reads like a total “puff piece” based on PR fluff.
