These are the world’s 50 best restaurants

The world’s 50 best restaurants, including two forward-thinking London venues, were revealed at a glittering ceremony in Shanghai last night.

Two London restaurants were named in the top 50, which was topped by Mirazur on the Côte d’Azur

Topping the list was Mirazur, Mauro Colagreco’s three Michelin-starred, seasonally focused restaurant in Menton on the French Riviera.

In second place was Noma, René Redzepi’s foraging focused, ‘new Nordic’ restaurant in Copenhagen, which recently relocated to a new site.

Also in the top 10 were Basque grill Asador Etxebarri (4), progressive Bangkok-based Indian Gaggan (5), Rasmus Kofoed’s Geranium in Copenhagen (5), Virgilio Martinez’s Central in Peru (6) and Alain Passard’s Arpège in Paris (8).

Flying the flag for the UK were Shoreditch-based modern British duo The Clove Club, which ranked at number 27, and Lyle’s, which took spot 33 on the list, both of which shine a light on local seasonal ingredients.

The list took a new format this year, meaning restaurants that have previously topped the list, including El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Osteria Francescana in Modena, and Eleven Madison Park in New York, can no longer appear on it.

The only reason that Noma appears on this year’s list is because it recently moved locations. Those previously voted number one are now grouped in a “best of the best’ hall of fame alongside the date they achieved the accolade.

Organisers made the bold move to remove previous winners from the list in order to “showcase more upcoming talent from around the world, ensuring the annual snapshot of gastronomic opinion remains dynamic, exciting and relevant.”
