Wyand named ‘Wine photographer of the year’
John Wyand’s picture of a Burgundy domaine has won this year’s Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year prize at the Pink Lady Photographer of the Year awards.
Wyand’s photo, ‘Cleaning the Cuverie’ at Domaine Faiveley in Mercurey was the overall winner from the three Errazuriz sponsored wine categories – ‘People’, ‘Places’ and ‘Produce’.
Another of his photos, ‘Aladdin’s Winery’, also scooped second place in the Places category he won while Jerome Genée’s ‘Travail au Cheval’ came third.
Wyand was presented with his prize by Errazuriz’s brand manager Katherine Wilson as well as a magnum of the Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve signed by Eduardo Chadwick.
In the ‘People’ category, Mick Rock’s pleasingly retro picture of a vigneron pruning his vines came first, Matt Wilson’s by turns striking and unsettling ‘Body Plunge’ came second and Miha Bratina’s Pinot Noir tasting was third.
Alessandra Spairani’s ‘Il Fruttaio’ won the ‘Produce’ category, while David Griffen took the second and third prizes for snaps from his native Australia.
“The competition was fierce,” said Caroline Kenyon, founder and director of the Awards, “there were 9,000 images entered from 77 countries – more entries and more countries than ever before – and the standard was phenomenal. “Jon’s image stood out from the rest in its category, however, for the way in which he made the subject matter both beautiful and atmospheric.”
