Top 10 biggest US craft brewers of 2018

US trade body the Brewers Association (BA) has released its annual list of the country’s biggest brewers based on sales volumes in 2018. while also revealing the biggest “craft” brewers.

Every year the BA details not only the biggest craft brewers overall, including the likes of Ab InBev, Constellation and MillersCoors, but the top 50 largest “craft beer” brands (definition below).

Of the top 50 overall brewing companies, 40 were small and independent craft brewing companies, highlighting the decreasing gap between craft and big beer.

“Although the market has grown more competitive, particularly for regional craft breweries with the widest distribution, these 50 small and independent brewing companies continue to lead the craft brewing market in sales through strong brands, quality, and innovation,” said Bart Watson, chief economist of the Brewers Association.

DEFINITION OF CRAFT

The BA’s definition of craft covers those brewers deemed to be “small, independent and traditional”.

Small means that the brewer has an annual production of six million barrels of beer or less, “flavoured malt beverages are not considered beer for purposes of this definition”.The association describes an American craft brewer as “small, independent and traditional”.

Independent means that “less than 25% of the craft brewery is owned or controlled by an alcoholic beverage industry member who is not themselves a craft brewer”.

Traditional relates to “a brewer who has either an all malt flagship (the beer which represents the greatest volume among that brewers brands) or has at least 50% of its volume in either all malt beers or in beers which use adjuncts to enhance rather than lighten flavour.”

10. Deschutes Brewery – Bend, OR

Flagship brews: Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Chainbreaker White IPA, Deschutes River Ale.

Founded: 1998

Based out of Bend, Oregon, Deschutes started life as a brew pub, and has grown to become one of the country’s biggest craft brewers.

It is notable for its specific focus on sustainability, working to limit its impact on the environment. For example, by working with the Deschutes River Conservancy, it is able to restore one billion gallons of water into the Deschutes River each year to offset its use of water in the brewing process.

9. Stone Brewing Co – Escondido, CA

Flagship brew: Stone Pale Ale

Founded: 1996

A pioneer for the US craft beer movement, Stone Brewing produced a number of highly hopped beers in the early 90s, including Arrogant Bastard, and was among the first to encourage consumers away from so-called ‘big beer’ styles of lager.

Last year, the company lodged a lawsuit against MillerCoors over its emphasis of the word “stone” in its Keystone Light rebrand, calling it a “surprisingly bold” and “disconcerting” appropriation of its own name. It followed the rebranding of MillerCoors Keystone Light beer to emphasise the “Stone” rather than the “Key” in its name, which Stone Brewing said demonstrated intention to create confusion in the marketplace with their own brand.

Flagship brew: Oskar Blues Brewery

Founded: 2015

The newest entry on the list, CANarchy was founded in 2015 with a focus on canned craft beers, and has grown quickly to make it into the top 10 for the second year running, having made its debut in 2017. Although it should be noted that the group is a co-operation of several breweries. which includes the Oskar Blues Brewery, Cigar City Brewing, the Perrin Brewing Company, Wasatch and Squatters breweries.

“The portfolio of craft breweries, partially funded by Fireman Capital Partners, including Oskar Blues Brewery, Perrin Brewing Company, Cigar City Brewing, Squatters Craft Beer and Wasatch Brewery is challenging corporate convention to preserve independent craft beer culture,” it states on its website.

7. Bell’s Brewery, Inc – Comstock, MI

Flagship brew: Bell’s Amber Ale

Founded: 1983

One of the oldest ‘modern’ craft brewers on the list, Bell’s started out as a homebrew operation, with Larry Bell using a 15-gallon soup kettle to produce its first beers.

Last year, the brewery began shipping to Texas for the first time, releasing an “Am I Right or Amarillo’ American IPA, taking the number of states it ships to to 32, including its latest addition, New Mexico.

6. Gambrinus – San Antonio/Berkeley/Portland, TX/CA/OR

Flagship brews: Shiner Bock – a Bavarian-style beer

Founded: 1986

A privately held craft beer company in San Antonio, Texas, The Gambrinus Company is best known as the owner and brewer of Shiner Beers, which are brewed at the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, Texas –oldest independent brewery in the state.

Gambrinus also owns the BridgePort Brewery in Portland, Oregon – the state’s oldest craft brewery – and the Trumer Brewery, which was built in Berkeley, California, in 2004 – the sister-brewery of the 400 year-old Trumer Brauerei in Salzurg, Austria.

5. Duvel Moortgat – Paso Robles/Kansas City/Cooperstown, CA/MO/NY

Flagship brew: Duvel pale ale

Founded: 1871

Duvel is a Belgian brewer, that owns several US craft breweries. In 2003 it acquired Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, New York. In, 2013, it bought Boulevard Brewing Company in Kansas City, Missouri.

Last year, the company bought a majority stake in east London-based Kombucha brand, JARR Kombucha, a fermented tea hand-bottled in Hackney Wick, first launched in 2015. The new partnership with Duvel Moortgat, in which Duvel now owns 60% of the Kombucha business, will allow JARR to “significantly increase production,” according to an emailed statement.

It also increased its stake in Italian brewery Birrificio del Ducato to 70% after acquiring its initial 35% share in 2016. With its majority stake in the business, Duvel hopes to bring Birrificio del Ducato’s craft beers to an international audience.

4. New Belgium Brewing Co – Fort Collins, CO

Flagship brew: Fat Tire Amber Ale

Founded: 1991

Like many US craft brewer, Nee Belgium Brewing began as a home brew project, inspired by a bike ride taken by founder Jeff Lebesch through Europe.

Jeff’s “basement brewery” was taken commercial in 1991 and is today one of the country’s biggest craft brewers.

The fourth largest US craft brewer, New Belgium produced around 955,000 barrels of beer in 2017, down from the 958,000 in 2016. This is compared to the growth it achieved between 2013 and 2014, when its production increased from 792,000 barrels to more than 945,000 barrels.

Most recently New Belgium confirmed that it had been forced to cut 28 jobs, accounting for around 4% of its workforce, at its sites in Fort Collins, Colorado and Asheville, North Carolina due to the “changing dynamics in craft brewing” in the US. The brewer said that the redundancies were not based on a lack of business, but rather an expansion project that it began in 2013 which is now proving unsustainable.

3. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co – Chico, CA

Flagship brew: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

Founded: 1979

Sierra Nevada is the result of the home brew endeavours of its founder Ken Grossman, who learned to home brew from the father of a close friend in the 1970s.

In 1976, he opened a home brew supply store in California named The Home Brew Shop, before founding the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company in 1980.

Most recently, the brewer collaborated with Bavarian state-owned brewery Weihenstephan, founded in 1040, to create a new wheat beer called Braupakt, that will be available from April 2018. The two breweries spent most of 2017 developing the recipe for the collaboration, ultimately deciding on a fruit-forward, hoppy wheat beer, brewed with Hallertauer Tradition, Amarillo and Chinook hops.

2. Boston Beer Co – Boston, MA

Flagship brand: Samuel Adams Boston Lager

Founded: 1984

A landmark of the US beer industry, the Boston Beer Co. is responsible for one of the country’s biggest beer brands – Samuel Adams – to which the vast majority of its volume is attributed.

The company was founded in 1984 by Jim Koch, upon discovering his great-great grandfather’s recipe for Louis Koch Lager, in his father’s attic, which evolved into Samuel Adams Boston Lager. The rest, as they say, is history.

1. D. G. Yuengling & Son, Inc – Pottsville, PA

Flagship brew: Yuengling Lager

Founded: 1829

Yuengling is the “oldest brewery in the United States”, with its roots starting with David Yuengling in 1829 at the Eagle Brewery in Pennsylvania, with the operation renamed D.G Yuengling & Son in 1873 after David’s son joined the business as partner.

In 2009 the brewery surpassed two million barrels, with Dick Yuengling – fifth generation – now heading up the business, alongside his four daughters.

Last year, the brewery announced the imminent release of its first addition to its core range in nearly two decades – the 4.7% Yuengling Golden Pilsner.

NB: Yuengling became eligible for “craft brewer” status in 2014 after the Brewers Association changed its definition of “adjunct grains”, such as corn, in early 2014 to be “traditional”, and therefore craft.
