The 75-hectare Quinta da Romeira in Bucelas is believed to boast the largest Arinto vineyard in Portugal, a white grape that also goes by the name of Pederna.
In a statement sent to Portuguese media last month, CEO of Sogrape, Fernando de Cunha Guedes said: “Entering Lisbon was, for Sogrape, mandatory. And to do so through the Bucelas sub-region is, for us, a huge cause for joy and pride, but also for great responsibility. ”
“It is a very special denomination of origin, where a great variety reigns and wines of exceptional quality are produced,” he added.
The statement also added that this acquisition will be accompanied by “investments throughout the value chain, from viticulture to oenology and market, to develop a sustainable and long-term project in the Lisbon region.”
“We will help change Lisbon,” it added.
The first mention of Quinta da Romeria dates back to 1703. It is owned by Wine Ventures, a company in which Francisco de Sousa Ferreira owns a majority share. The estate owns brands including Régia and Morgado de Sta. Catherina and has a capacity of 20,000 hectolitres.
Founded in 1942 and headquartered in Vila Nova de Gaia, Sogrape’s portfolio includes Port brands Sandeman, Ferreira and Offley and wine brands Mateus, Casa Ferreirinha, Quinta dos Carvalhais, Gazela and Azervedo. Outside of Portugal it produces wine in Spain (Bodegas LAN), Argentina (Finca Flichman), Chile (Viña Los Boldos) and New Zealand (Framingham).
