Bourgogne Week returns to Hong Kong with the 2017 vintage

‘Bourgogne Week’ will return to Hong Kong next year from 25 February to 1 March 2019 to showcase the 2017 vintage, a more generous year that saw production volumes go “back to normal” after the frost-bitten 2016 vintage.

The week-long promotional campaign organised by the Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins de Bourgogne (BIVB) will consist of one-day tasting, dinners and retail promotions across different shops in the city to drum up interest in the 2017 vintage.

One of the highlights is the ‘One Day for Bourgogne’ tasting, which will bring together around 25 importers to present their range of Burgundy wines, with the spotlight on lesser-known appellations.

The series of events, according to BIVB, will allow trade and consumers to discover the “diversity of Bourgogne wines in one of Asia’s leading wine markets.”

The 2017 vintage provided a relief for producers who were affected by the limited 2016 vintage. The total volume for 2017 stood at over 1.5 million hectolitres, compared with 2016’s 1.223 million hectolitres following frosts in late April that hit the entire length of Burgundy from Chablis, as reported at the time by db.

The fifth biggest market for Burgundy wines in terms of revenue, Hong Kong remains the second most valuable market for Burgundy in Asia after Japan. From January to November last year, overall Burgundian wine exports to Hong Kong dropped by 4.2% in terms of volume to 972,070 bottles, while its export value rose by 17.8% year-on-year to €44 million – a “new record” following two years’ strong growth – according to BIVB.
