Sotheby’s to offer ultra rare 50 year-old Chivas

Scotch producer Chivas has released just four bottles of a 50 year-old spirit in order to mark Manchester United’s European Cup victory in 1968, with only one being offered to the public.

Just four bottles of the whisky are being released, each representing one of the goals scored by the team in their 4-1 victory over Benfica at Wembley in May 1968.

One is currently being offered by Sotheby’s as part of an online auction that is running until 30 November.

All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Manchester United Foundation. It is the only bottle that will be made available for general sale.

With an estimate of £20,000-£30,000, the current bid on the whisky is £18,000.

In its role as the official spirits partner of the Premier League club, Chivas is donating another bottle to the Manchester United Museum and another will be awarded to someone who has been a “passionate” fan of the team for the past 50 years.

The fourth and final bottle will be put on display at Chivas’s Strathisla distillery in Speyside.

The bottles is presented in a hand-blown crystal decanter and display case (in deep blue which was the colour of the team’s away kit they wore at the match). Each bottle is mounted with a plaque and decorated with the team’s crest at the time.
