5 cities with the highest number of bars in the world

Summer is over, which can only mean one thing: it’s time to book a weekend away before the winter blues truly sets in

While it’s not always advisable to plan a holiday around the amount of drinking you plan to accomplish, it can be inevitable, and when so many new and innovative bars are starting to open around the world, basing your holiday on venues you want to visit is a great way to explore a new city.

Alpha Travel Insurance analysed data on Tripadvisor to find out the cities with the highest number of bars and pubs.

London, perhaps unsurprisingly, came out on top, with a whopping 1,327 pubs and bars in and around the capital, beating the likes of New York and Tokyo to 1st place.

London’s top bar, according to Tripadvisor reviewers, is the Oxford Street branch of on-trade giant Be At One, but the further down Tripadvisor’s list you look, the more likely you are to find speakeasy-style cocktail bars and craft-focused drinking dens ranking in the top three for their city.

We’ve taken a look at the top 5 cities in the list, as well as the most popular venues in those cities.

From Bloody Marys in Barcelona to immersive cocktail experiences in Brick Lane, here are the booziest cities in the world.

Just curious, we have news that registered bars in Shanghai has reached 1600 from last week.

  2. Rick says:

955 bars between Tokyo’s 13 million people! Don’t think so. There are 200 bars in Golden Gai alone.
