JD Wetherspoon to ban dogs from its pubs

Pub chain JD Wetherspoon is to enforce a ban on dogs from next month with canines set to be barred from just under 1,000 venues across the UK and the Republic of Ireland from 10 September.

Wetherspoon has in fact had a dog ban in place since 1979, however over the years, it has allowed “a few exceptions”.

Among the reasons given for the ban were concerns for the safety of children and hygiene. Local media began reporting the news last week after signs were put up in pubs giving notice of the ban.

The current version of the dog policy on the company’s website reads: “While we are fond of dogs, we permit only registered assistance dogs inside our pubs and hotels. To avoid any confusion or unnecessary upset, please ensure that your dog is wearing the recognisable leash/collar or harness. It would also be helpful if you could bring along suitable documentation to explain the dog’s purpose.

“A limited number of pubs do permit dogs on a lead into the garden and/or other external areas. Please check directly with the pub which you are planning to visit”.

However, over the past week, signs bearing an updated policy have been put up in pubs stating that dogs were not allowed in pubs “including all outside areas”.

“After much consultation, we will now be strictly enforcing this policy everywhere. In order to give those affected time to adjust we have set a deadline of Monday, September 10,” it added.

A spokesperson for Wetherspoon confirmed the decision: “Even well behaved dogs can be unpredictable and every dog owner thinks their dog is perfect.

“We welcome a lot of children and families at our restaurants. Younger children in particular can be unpredictable around dogs and many are scared of dogs.

“We serve a lot of food. Unfortunately not all owners are diligent over cleaning up dog mess”.

Well my pooch and I are planning to boycott Wetherspoons anyway so not a problem for me!

  2. Al B says:

But they’ll still allow assistance dogs, right?

Under the Equality Act 2010, it’s against the law for service providers to treat people with disabilities less favourably because of their disability, or because they have a guide or assistance dog with them.

  3. Bob Smith says:

Great timing Wetherspoons! Just as there is a surge in dog ownership. We will just take our hard earned cash and pooch else where! Dimwits.

  4. Andrew Paterson says:

Just the same as a minority of patrons on your pubs. Unpredictable, check. Children afraid of them, check. Leave a mess (litter and vomit), check. Should be banning humans too.
