Hong Kong brewing company debuts craft beer to save sea turtles

Hong Kong’s Olive Ridley Brewing Co has launched three new beers and pledged part of their profits to a charity foundation dedicated to protecting and preserving the Olive Ridley sea turtle, one of the world’s smallest species of turtle.

Named for the distinct olive colour of its skin and shell, the Olive Ridley sea turtle is one of the smallest species of turtles, and is typically found in Indian and Pacific Oceans.

Like many sea turtles, the destruction of their various nesting sites around the world means that they are at risk of becoming endangered.

One of the three beers, ‘The Pacific Pilsner’, is described as a “true summertime drink” inspired by New Zealand hops. The flavours are created by dry hopping Motueka and Hallertau Blanc – slightly malty with a touch of bitterness, according to the company.

The ‘Shell Shock IPA’ is said to have flavours of grapefruit and citrus on the tongue and zesty citrus aromas on the nose.  While the ‘Morjim Pale Ale’ is dry hopped with Citra and Cascade hops, giving off an “intricate aroma of citrus and grapefruit that follows through to the palate,” said the brewing company.

Nineteen restaurants, bars and liquor stores in Hong Kong have joined hands with the brewing company to sell the beers including Bar Butler, Winerack, HK Liquorland, Cofftea, White Stag, Pheonix, Coa, Locofama, The Flying Pig Bistro, Hooked, Ho Chuen, Picture House, Electric Ave, Praya Waterfront, 42 Davies, Boilermaker, Black Star, Bombay Dreams, and Tramline Liquor HK.
