Wildfires blaze in Napa County and Mendocino

Deadly wildfires have been raging in northern California for the past five days and include blazes in the wine regions of Napa County and Mendocino.

As reported by NBC, authorities issued evacuation orders in Napa County when several structures caught fire in the Berryessa Highlands on Saturday.

On Sunday night the Steele fire in Napa County, which had spread across 150 acres of land and destroyed eight structures, was 65% contained.

Two further fires (the River and Ranch fires) burning 30 miles apart prompted mandatory evacuations in Mendocino County, threatening thousands of buildings.

Around 1,379 firefighters were working to put out the fires, which were just 5% contained on Sunday according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The worst of the fires, the Carr fire, is currently blazing in the outskirts of Redding in Shasta County, where 38,000 people have been evacuated. The fire has claimed the lives of six people, including two firefighters and two children.

On Sunday over 5,000 structures in Redding were threatened and the Carr fire, which has consumed 95,000 acres, was just 17% contained.

States of emergency have been declared in Mendocino, Napa County and Lake County, with 17 major fires currently blazing across California across 200,000 acres stretching from San Diego to the Oregon border. Throughout the state over 10,000 firefighters are currently tackling the wildfires.
